Peer Support is an opportunity for people to use their own experiences to help each other.
Led by staff with lived experience of mental health, our Southampton Peer Support service offers both one-to-one and activity groups.
How to access
You can access Peer Support in Southampton in the following ways:
- Self-refer to our community groups via Mayfield Garden Centre or by emailing us: southampton@solentmind.org.uk
- Ask your GP or another mental health professional to refer you for one-to-one support
- By dropping in to The Lighthouse for crisis support – please see below
Community support groups
We run friendly, informal groups across the Southampton area where participants can learn together, support each other and give each other hope. We create spaces where everyone feels safe, accepted and understood.
These are run by people who have experienced their own mental health problems, which means everyone can mutually support each other whilst all views and experiences are equally valued.
Currently, groups include mindful arts and crafts, creative journaling, coffee and a chat, and a trans support group.
Some of our peer support groups run from Mayfield Garden Centre and Café. More information about these can be found here.
The Lighthouse
We also have peer support workers working at The Lighthouse out-of-hours crisis centres in Bitterne and Shirley. These services provide non-judgmental urgent mental health support, between 4.30pm and 11.30pm, 365 days a year.
You can access The Lighthouse remotely by using Attend Anywhere or by texting ‘Lighthouse’ to 07789390812.
Alternatively, you can drop in to either location – find out more here.
Who is it for?
Peer Support is for anyone who feels that connecting with others could help their emotional health.
You do not need to have a diagnosed mental health issue and you do not need to be accessing other kinds of wellbeing support to join us. Just follow the steps above to make a referral.
We understand coming along to a group or activity for the first time can be difficult, so if you would like to talk to someone or meet up with one of our team first, we're happy to help.
