Remind, Portsmouth’s dementia service, is celebrating the launch of Portsmouth’s Dementia Action Alliance with an event on 21st September at Gunwharf Quays. A local dementia action alliance is a network of organisations, businesses and community members who want to improve the lives of local people affected by dementia.

Sarita Chavda, from the Remind service, says, ”We are so pleased to have reached this far with the Portsmouth Dementia Action Alliance and registering Portsmouth as a Dementia Friendly City.  This launch event is a great way to celebrate where we have reached and where we would like to be in the future in making Portsmouth a community more aware of dementia, with all those involved in making this happen.”

Penny Ford, Alzheimer’s Society’s Senior Dementia Friendly Communities Officer, added, “It’s vital that people living with dementia should still be able to enjoy all Portsmouth has to offer. Many people with dementia have reported feeling trapped in their own homes and let-down by their communities, with one in three only getting out once a week and one in 10 only manage this once a month.

“The Portsmouth Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) aims to address the isolation that many people living with dementia can feel and we are delighted to see so many of Portsmouth’s greatest attractions and services committing to helping people in the community live well with dementia.”

Cllr Luke Stubbs, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care said, “Portsmouth City Council is proud to be part of this alliance. This launch will help showcase the great work Portsmouth Action Alliance has achieved to date in helping Portsmouth become a Dementia Friendly City. This is an exciting opportunity to work together across all sectors to help make life a little bit easier for people with dementia, and we would encourage all organisations to get involved.’

The Remind Dementia Service is working to make Portsmouth a Dementia Friendly City. By engaging with local businesses and community services, they help people have a better understanding of how they can support people with dementia and their carers.
