New mental health Advocacy Service launches in Portsmouth
Advocacy is a way to support and enable people to speak up and defend their rights. From 1st July 2016 Solent Mind and Choices Advocacy will be working in partnership to deliver high quality advocacy services across the Portsmouth area.
Helen Roberts, Solent Mind’s Head of Advocacy comments, “Our advocacy service has expanded greatly over the last few years, allowing us to provide mental health advocates in a wide variety of settings and locations. In the last year we responded to over 1,500 referrals from clients with a range of needs. We work in hospitals, units and communities across Southampton and Hampshire and we are delighted to now be able to work in Portsmouth.”
Alison Flack, Chief Executive Officer for Choices Advocacy adds, “This is an exciting opportunity to be working together to provide independent advocacy services to people in Portsmouth.”
Portsmouth Advocacy will offer a wide range of free advocacy services, including Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA), Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), Care Act, Independent Mental Health Advocacy (IMHA) and some community advocacy, as well as self-advocacy support to vulnerable people living in Portsmouth.
A service user comments, “While I was in hospital I was given a course of treatment which I didn’t want, and felt was wrong for me. No-one took my views seriously until the advocate got involved. She helped me to get my point across and get a second opinion. The treatment was stopped and I was so relieved.”
If you have learning disabilities, mental health issues, autism, physical and sensory disabilities, are an older person, have dementia or other long term conditions you may be eligible to get the help of an advocate. There are many different types of advocacy available and the type of advocate you can access will depend on your circumstances and needs.

What is an Advocate? An advocate is an independent third party who will help you to:
- Express your views and concerns
- Exercise your rights
- Have your interests represented
- Access information and services
- Explore your choices and options
- Defend and promote your rights and entitlements
- Explore your options and exercise your right of choice
To do this an advocate might help you to write letters, prepare and go with you to meetings, or listen to you and help you to understand your options and rights. They will help you without judgement or opinion. An advocate will not provide advice, counselling, mediation, social work, support work or befriend. They are there to make sure your voice is heard.
