We have launched an appeal to raise funds to support ex-service people experiencing mental health problems through a new ‘Seeds of Hope’ scheme. We have just six weeks in which to raise £5,000 to support ten veterans at Mayfield Nurseries. If the fundraising target can be reached in time, Comic Relief will match the amount raised. A total target of £10,000 is needed to support the scheme which will run from January 2018.
Kevin, a Veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder currently attending Mayfield Nurseries says, “Coming here has changed my life. My PTSD is more manageable and I can lose myself in the plants. The smell and the touch helps me focus on the present and to enjoy my time here. I have met so many people who have now become friends and I finally feel I can look forward to a better future.”
Rachel Hampton, Mayfield Nurseries Manager adds, “I am fortunate to be able to see first- hand how gardening can help build lives, and in Kevin’s case it’s amazing how he has been able to turn his life around. We want to be able to spread our support to more people through the Seeds of Hope service, and we are asking people to please get behind this campaign’.
The new scheme will provide weekly sessions at Mayfield plant nursery in Weston Lane, Southampton, helping people to improve their mental health through gardening, mindfulness and peer support to reduce isolation. £1,000 will pay for one ex-service person to attend Seeds of Hope sessions for a year, helping them to rebuild their lives.
With just six weeks to raise £5,000 and qualify for Comic Relief’s match funding, Solent Mind is asking for the public’s help. Please donate at http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/seeds-of-hope. Thank you for your support.
