Hannah is a volunteer at Solent Mind's Remind service. Here she shares her story.
A passionate Psychology student at Southampton Solent University, Hannah has a strong interest in mental health and cognitive wellbeing. Eager to gain hands-on experience, she began volunteering with Solent Mind’s Remind service, supporting individuals living with dementia.
At just 20 years old, Hannah has already made a meaningful impact through her role.
“I help facilitate Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) sessions, which are designed to support memory, thinking skills, and social interaction for people with dementia.
“My role involves encouraging conversations, assisting with group activities, and helping to create a welcoming, inclusive environment where everyone feels valued.”
As Hannah looks ahead to her future career, she reflects on how the experience has shaped her career plans.
“My long-term goal is to complete a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and become a Clinical Neuropsychologist. Volunteering with the Remind team has been incredibly rewarding. It’s deepened my understanding of the challenges faced by people living with dementia and has reinforced my desire to work in a clinical setting, supporting individuals with neurological conditions.
“It’s also helped me develop essential skills such as empathy, communication, and patience, which I know will be crucial for me in the future.”
The Southampton student also shared how inspiring it has been to witness the positive impact the Remind service is having on the people it supports.
“The staff and volunteers create such a warm, supportive atmosphere. It’s clear how important it is for people with dementia to feel engaged, connected, and respected.
“I’ve come to really appreciate the vital role that Solent Mind plays in the community - breaking down stigma, promoting mental health awareness, and ensuring that those in need know where to turn for support.”
