Cristina's story

Cristina is a volunteer at Solent Mind’s Eastleigh Wellbeing Centre. Here she shares her story.

With a passion for horticulture and psychology, Cristina leads the gardening group at our Eastleigh wellbeing centre, helping others discover the therapeutic benefits of looking after nature. Her work is already making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who attend.

Gaining experience

The 39-year-old works as a product quality manager at a well-known DIY retailer in Southampton, where she looks after the quality of items sold in the horticultural section. She recently began studying social and therapeutic horticulture and began looking for volunteering opportunities in the area.

“I’ve always been passionate about both horticulture and human behaviour. With my son growing up and becoming more independent, I was able to direct some of my focus and time towards my passions. I decided to take on further study and wanted to complement that with some volunteering experience.”

Building a community through gardening

When Cristina heard that Solent Mind was looking to start a gardening group for service users, she knew it was the perfect fit. Three months in, the volunteer – who also donates plants to the centre – says it’s already having a positive impact.

“We’ve built a lovely little community. People are coming back each week, and I can see how it’s lifting their spirits. Gardening gives people a sense of purpose and helps shift focus away from life’s stresses. Being outdoors, getting fresh air and exercise, and connecting with others – it’s all incredibly beneficial.”

The group’s activities include planting, sowing seeds, and maintaining the garden. One volunteer with carpentry skills is even building a bench for the space, sharing his knowledge with the group along the way.

A wellbeing boost

It’s not just the participants who benefit – Cristina says the experience has been just as rewarding for her.

“Spending two hours a week outside, working with others, is so good for my own wellbeing. I love helping people and seeing how this group supports others is just fantastic.”

Welcoming space for all

When Cristina first started the group in Eastleigh, the wellbeing centre’s garden was in need of some love. Thanks to the group’s efforts, it’s now a welcoming, colourful space for everyone at the centre to enjoy.

“The whole centre now has a beautiful outdoor area to relax in. That’s something we’re all really proud of.”
