To mark World Mental Health Day on Friday 10 October, Solent Mind will be at Westquay in Southampton to raise awareness of mental health in the local community as part of our ‘Beyond the label’ campaign.

As the largest mental health charity in Hampshire, we want to ensure the people of Southampton know about the range of services available to those who need it across the region.

Working in partnership with Westquay, we have secured an exclusive spot in the popular shopping centre, where staff from our fundraising, wellbeing, employment and crisis teams will be available to offer advice about Solent Mind’s services. They will also be providing wellbeing tips to shoppers and encouraging people to contribute to an interactive art wall around our ‘Beyond the label’ theme, which highlights the misconceptions around mental health ‘labels’.

Sally Arscott, Solent Mind CEO, said: “We want people in our communities to know we are here, and be aware of the wide range of mental health services we have available to them when they need it. A huge thank you to Westquay for giving us the opportunity to highlight the support we have on offer to local people on World Mental Health Day.”

Aaron Sanchious, Occupier and Customer Manager at Westquay, said: “Solent Mind’s dedication to mental health and positive impact on our community is truly inspiring, and we’re delighted to be working alongside them. At Westquay, we know mental health touches every part of daily experience, shaping how we connect with others and how we support those around us, and we’re grateful to be able to learn from the real difference the charity is making to so many people's lives.”

Collaborating with Southampton Solent University, Solent Mind has also worked with graphics students who have created posters in line with our ‘Beyond the label’ campaign, to encourage conversations about mental health experiences and ‘labels’.

Ellie Kilburn, Course Leader Graphic Design at the University, said: “Working with Solent Mind has been a great opportunity for our first-year Graphics and Illustration students to gain real world experience right at the start of their education journey. Mental health affects us all so to be able to use their specialist skills to help the work that the charity is doing, has been incredibly rewarding. It is a project that we are really proud of!”

We will be sharing messages of hope across our social channels in the run up to World Mental Health Day, directing people to our services. And in partnership with Southampton City Council, large-scale digital awareness displays will be shown across Southampton.

World Mental Health Day takes place every year on 10 October. It’s an opportunity for us all to consider how, together, we can help everyone have better mental health.

Solent Mind will have a stand on the ground floor at Westquay shopping centre in Southampton on Friday 10 October from 10am until 5pm.
