To mark Time to Talk Day on Thursday 5 February, Solent Mind is highlighting the importance of talking and connecting with others to support positive wellbeing.

Our charity offers a variety of mental health services to people who need it in Hampshire, and we want to encourage anyone who might be struggling to share how they’re feeling – even if that’s just with a friend or family member.

In collaboration with Southampton Mental Health Network, we’re supporting a citywide Power of Hello Campaign, which is focussing on the simple yet powerful act of saying ‘hello’.

The awareness campaign aims to improve citywide knowledge of the local mental health and wellbeing services and activities on offer to the community, while emphasising the importance of connection. This will culminate in a Southampton Mental Health Friendly Day on Wednesday 8 July, with social gatherings organised across the city.

Sally Arscott, Solent Mind CEO, said: “Having the opportunity to talk and connect with others is vital for our mental health. Just a simple ‘hello’ can make all the difference.

“We’re delighted to be working with Southampton Mental Health Network on this campaign, which is bringing the community together to support the wellbeing of the city’s residents.”

Chloe Naegeli, Coordinator from Southampton Mental Health Network, added: “Our Power of Hello campaign will encourage social connection and highlight just how important the simple act of saying hello is for our mental health.

“We are asking as many businesses, organisations and individuals as possible to get involved, even if that’s just by saying ‘hello’ to someone in the street or making eye contact and sharing a smile on a bus journey. The simple, friendly act of acknowledging another person could make someone’s day, helping to boost positive mental wellbeing.”

For Time to Talk Day, Solent Mind’s Mayfield Garden Centre will be setting up a ‘Talking Table’ for visitors on Thursday 5 February, providing a space for conversation and connection. People in the region are invited to head over to the Southampton garden centre, explore its variety of plants and gifts, enjoy a coffee or a tasty treat in the café, and chat to someone new.

Southampton Mental Health Network is specifically designed to showcase how and where to access support in the city.
