'Roots & Branches' tickets on sale now

'Roots & Branches', a play crafted from an inter-generational dementia programme, tickets are available now for dates in Fareham and Southampton.

Rebecca from Solent Recovery College

Tickets are now on sale for the culmination of the first year of £74,000+ inter-generational programme.

Earlier this year, Solent Mind and Theatre for Life were awarded £74,729 in funding from The National Lottery Community Fund for Roots & Branches, a programme that looked to connect young theatre makers (16 to 25) with older people with dementia.

Tickets for the initial performances of ‘Roots and Branches’ are now on sale, the 23rd of June at MAST Mayflower studios in Southampton and on the 26th and 27th of August at the Ashcroft Arts Centre in Fareham. Tickets for either venue can be found here: https://linktr.ee/theatreforlifeevents

‘Roots & Branches’ writer, Troy Chessman, said: “Roots and branches, to me, is this beautiful tapestry of colourful and iridescent memories, woven together using the shared memories and life experiences of our dementia participants.

“It’s not conventional theatre, it’s storytelling in its purest form, reminiscing, recreating and reliving cherished memories from yesteryear, that defined a generation.”

The performance was created through weekly, creative sessions between the young theatre makers and people diagnosed with dementia at Mayfield Nurseries in Southampton and Remind Dementia service in Portsmouth.

The groups shared experiences to gain an insight into each others lives through restorative and arts based activities which improve health, wellbeing and social isolation. The programme focuses on the importance and benefits of inter-generational relationships.

Troy explains: “This is a play for anyone and everyone curious to hear from those who came before us.

“It will hopefully leave our audiences eager to go home and ask questions, to learn more about their grandparents/parents/ neighbours and to start a conversation about what it really means to experience dementia and to challenge our perception of those who carry the diagnosis.”
