Solent Mind’s Digital Skills Team has recently reached an incredible milestone and has celebrated the support it has provided to 500 service users in our local communities.
The team’s free casual courses and drop-ins have been on offer to people across the region for almost 3 years. They’ve been helping individuals adapt to ever changing technologies, providing the support they need to navigate the digital age with ease.
It is estimated that around 16% of the UK population are unable to browse the Internet and use technology devices without assistance. And Sarah Rees, Solent Mind Digital Peer Support Worker, said that feeling detached from the digital world, can have a negative impact on people’s mental health.
She said: “Our world is becoming more digitally engulfed as each day passes, and this brings out fear, confusion and frustration in a lot of people, which can have a tangibly negative impact on their mental health and independence. Digital inclusion is more critical than a lot of people realise, as online processes encompass just about every facet of modern living.”
Reflecting on the charity’s achievement of supporting more than 500 people with digital skills, Sarah added: “Helping individuals build confidence and ability, and witnessing the positive impact it has on their daily lives, is beyond words. The happy tears, heartfelt hugs, and kind messages we’ve received speak volumes. We’re looking forward to helping the next 500!”
Solent Mind offers digital support via an 8-week course or through drop-ins at the charity’s Mayfield Garden Centre in Southampton. It’s available to anyone who needs support with digital skills in Southampton, Portsmouth and Southern Hampshire.
