We are pleased to announce the launch of a new counselling service for care leavers aged 18–25 who are currently supported by Southampton City Council.
Delivered by Solent Mind's Open Minds counselling service, the initiative provides fully funded one-to-one counselling designed to help care leavers access timely mental health support, with no waiting list and no diagnosis required.
This service has been developed to provide accessible, compassionate support for young adults who may be experiencing emotional or mental health challenges that are affecting their wellbeing or day-to-day life.
Open Minds counsellors can support people with a wide range of concerns, and is available in a variety of formats, allowing individuals to access support in a way that works best for them. Sessions can take place online, over the telephone, in person at Solent Mind's Southampton and Winchester centres, or through Walk and Talk sessions in Southampton.
Sally Arscott, CEO of Solent Mind, said:
"We know that the transition into adulthood can bring unique challenges for care leavers, and timely access to emotional support can make a significant difference. Through Open Minds, we are pleased to be able to offer a flexible and accessible counselling service that provides a safe space for young people to explore their experiences and improve their wellbeing."
The service is funded by Southampton City Council and aims to ensure care leavers can access timely professional mental health support.
Steph Murray, Director for Children’s Social Care at Southampton City Council commented on the collaboration:
“I believe this service will open new opportunities for our care leavers to access help that supports their emotional wellbeing, wherever they live and whatever their circumstances. Being able to share worries and feelings, being heard, knowing where to find extra support when life feels hard - we want this help to be available to all of our care leavers at the right time, enabling them to take the next steps in their lives with greater confidence, and achieve their dreams.”
