Portsmouth man rides Vespa from Pompey to Pompeii

Portsmouth resident, Alex, completed an epic 2,000-mile Vespa journey from Pompey to Pompeii in aid of Solent Mind. Through his remarkable fundraising journey across 10 countries, he's helping to raise awareness of the lasting impact of loss and the importance of mental health support.

Alex recently completed an extraordinary fundraising challenge for Solent Mind, riding a Vespa more than 2,000 miles from Portsmouth to Pompeii.

The challenge, called P2P – Pompey to Pompeii, saw Alex travel through 10 countries in just four days, journeying across the UK, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, San Marino and Italy.

But for Alex, the challenge was about much more than the miles travelled. He chose to raise money for Solent Mind because of his own experiences of grief and the impact bereavement can have on mental health.

From grief to fundraising for mental health

Alex's fundraising journey was inspired by the loss of both his father and his friend, Mathew.

He chose to support Solent Mind because of his own experiences of grief and the impact bereavement can have on mental health.

"Losing my dad had a huge impact on my mental health," Alex said. "Grief can completely change how you think, feel and cope with everyday life. People often focus on the person who has died, but those left behind can be struggling in ways others can't see."

After later losing his friend Mathew, Alex wanted to do something meaningful in his memory while raising awareness of grief, loss and mental health.

"Solent Mind felt like the right charity because the work they do is local, practical and genuinely needed. People need to know that support is available and they don't have to face things alone."

The Pompey to Pompeii vespa challenge

The P2P – Pompey to Pompeii challenge took Alex through 10 countries and around 2,000 miles in just four days.

Despite the physical and mental demands of the journey, he remained focused on the reason behind it.

"Reaching Pompeii was an incredible feeling," Alex said. "Looking back at the distance I'd covered and thinking, 'I actually did it,' was hard to believe. It was challenging, but unforgettable."

Raising awareness of grief and mental health

As well as raising funds for Solent Mind, the challenge sparked important conversations about mental health and bereavement.

Alex was overwhelmed by the support he received throughout the journey.

"People donated, shared messages and opened up about their own experiences of mental health," he said. "That was one of the most powerful parts of the whole experience."

What Alex learned about grief, resilience and support

The challenge reinforced for Alex just how important support and connection can be during difficult times.

"I've learned that grief doesn't just disappear, and mental health isn't something people should have to deal with on their own," he said. "Support matters, conversation matters, and sometimes doing something a little out of the ordinary can turn loss into something positive."

Thank you, Alex

Solent Mind's Fundraising Manager, Gaynor Jordan-Davis, said:

"We're incredibly grateful to Alex for taking on this amazing challenge and for sharing his personal experiences so openly.

"By raising funds and starting conversations about grief and mental health, Alex is helping more people understand that support is available and that they do not have to face difficult times alone."

We're honoured that Alex chose to support Solent Mind through this remarkable fundraising challenge and would like to say a huge congratulations on completing his Pompey to Pompeii journey.
