Giving back with every step: Jimmy to take on third Great South Run for Solent Mind

Jimmy is preparing to take on the Great South Run in aid of Solent Mind for the third year in a row.

Jimmy (41) from Southsea is preparing to take on the Great South Run for the third year in a row, and once again, he will be raising money for Solent Mind.

Finding strength through support

In 2023, Jimmy took part in the 10-mile running event in Portsmouth for the first time. He chose to run in aid of Solent Mind after he received support during a dark time in his life.

“I’ve had some mental health issues in the past,” he shares. “There was a time when I was in a very dark place. Reaching out for help made a huge difference. Raising money for a charity which is supporting others in a similar situation, is very important to me.”

Fundraising with purpose

The run unfortunately didn’t go ahead in 2024, but that didn’t stop Jimmy. He continued his fundraising efforts regardless.

“We can’t take on all battles ourselves,” he says. “I think it’s fantastic what mental health charities, like Solent Mind, are doing to support people in the local area. When bad weather stopped the event going ahead last year, I still ran 10 miles so that I could honour the donations I’d received.”

Why the Great South Run?

Talking about his decision to join the thousands of other runners who take part in the Great South Run every year, Jimmy added: “It’s on my doorstep. I hadn’t run it before 2023, but I was keen to take on a fundraising challenge for Solent Mind. I enjoy running and regularly take part in local Parkruns, so it was ideal.”

Overcoming setbacks

After undergoing knee surgery last year, Jimmy was unable to run. To stay active, he turned to cycling. He also kept connected by volunteering as a marshall at his local Parkrun event.

“Getting up for a 9am run every Saturday with other runners is a great start to the weekend. I missed that after my surgery. Volunteering was just as good for my mental health.”

Looking ahead to this year’s event

Jimmy now feels ready to lace up his running shoes again. And, with this year’s Great South Run on the horizon, he said he’s not just running for himself, but for everyone who’s ever needed support with their mental health.

“Knowing I’m raising money for Solent Mind spurs me on,” he explained. “I’m proud of where I am now, but I couldn’t have done it on my own. If the funds I raise can help go towards supporting others who are struggling, then it’s all hugely worthwhile!”

Jimmy’s employer has stepped up to support the inspiring employee and has pledged to match whatever he raises.

“I’m aiming to raise £500, which would double to £1,000 with my company’s contribution.”

The 2025 Great South Run will take place on Sunday 19 October.
