Gina Lloyd, from Totton, is preparing to take on the ABP Southampton 10k this April to raise money for Solent Mind.

Like many others, the 28-year-old will be running around Southampton’s landmarks on Sunday 6 April. She said she’s delighted to be taking on the challenge in aid of the mental health charity which supported her during a difficult time.

Overcoming mental health challenges

Gina said: “When I was 17, I suffered with chronic depression and found daily life overwhelming. I had support from Solent Mind’s Mayfield Garden Centre at the time, which really helped. To have the opportunity to give back, means so much to me.”

As a teenager, Gina also battled with self-harm, often feeling isolated. Visiting Mayfield with a family friend became a real turning point. “Mayfield is a beautiful place, and I remember it fondly. I spent time away from my thoughts, painting signs for the plants in the charity’s nursery. I wasn’t judged there, and meeting others who were struggling too helped me feel less alone.”

How running helps mental wellbeing

Although Gina still deals with anxiety daily, running has become an important coping tool.

“Running is one of the best things I can do for my mental health. It clears my head and stops me overthinking. I’m very excited to be taking part in my first official challenge.”

Looking ahead to the challenge and fundraising goal

On Sunday 6 April, Gina will join many others in Southampton city centre, running a 10k route that starts and finishes at the city’s iconic Guildhall. So far, she has raised £100 for Solent Mind and hopes to double that before race day.

“If I can raise £200, I’d be thrilled, and knowing the money is going to such an incredible cause, makes it even more meaningful.”

The ABP Southampton Marathon event will take place on Sunday 6 April. As well as the full marathon, runners can also sign up to a half marathon, a 10k or a 5k.
