It’s not unusual for Solent Mind to be selected by a local orchestra wanting to raise money for mental health, often prompted by one or two members of the orchestra having a personal interest in mental health.
On Saturday 27th October, Ocean Brass performed in Chandlers Ford in aid of Solent Mind, but the concert was also in memory of Ian Carter who, as well as being a percussionist in Ocean Brass, also worked in mental health as an occupational therapist. Tragically Ian succumbed to his own depression last year.
Now you don’t have to come from Yorkshire to appreciate that brass music can be extraordinarily evocative, and Ocean Brass are a high class band. But it was meeting Ian’s family and in particular listening to his father that was so inspiring. Steve Carter’s plea to the audience was that even the smallest gift could make a real difference to someone’s life. What he did not need to say, of course, was that in mental health work such a difference may transform, and sometimes even save a life.
