We came, we saw, we conquered our fears!

Back in the winter, the two of us agreed to challenge ourselves to do a fundraising run for Solent Mind. We chose the ABP Southampton 10K, sent off our entry forms, and pulled on our trainers. Neither of us is what you might think of as a natural athlete, but we embarked on our training (separately as we live a long way apart), determined that we could do this – and on Sunday 24th April, we did!

Over the weeks we’ve experienced illness and injury which interfered with our training, and we had days when the motivation just wasn’t there.

But we both know, from a wealth of evidence, and from our personal experience, that being physically active can really support our mental health and wellbeing. 

The event itself had a tremendous atmosphere, with over 7,000 runners between the Half Marathon and the 10K, and our nerves faded, with excitement taking over, as we jogged up and down waiting for the start signal. The Itchen Bridge (over and back), through St. Mary’s Stadium, and 6.2 miles later, we reached the finish line, both exceeding our target times.

What a great feeling! We’ve also surpassed our fundraising target, and all the money we’ve raised will go to supporting peer support and peer-led initiatives in Solent Mind.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us, through donations and by encouraging and cheering us on!And as two women with experience (rather than youth) on our side, we have embraced the peer support element of doing this challenge together.

It’s a good job no-one else has had to endure the steady stream of “Running Bore” email and text updates we’ve sent each other over the last few weeks.
