Remind Dementia Service celebrates Dementia Awareness Week 2017

Friday, 12 May 2017

Remind, Portsmouth’s Dementia Service, is celebrating Dementia Awareness Week (Monday 15th to Sunday 21st May), with a variety of activities for service users and the public. From a tea dance at Gunwharf Quays to an information hub at Queen Alexandra Hospital, the Remind team will be working to raise awareness and understanding of dementia.

Sarita Chavda, Remind Service Manager, says, “There are many awareness weeks, however for the Remind service, Dementia Awareness Week is an important time to increase understanding of dementia and combat stigma and discrimination.  People can live well with dementia despite the challenges, and we are working to help Portsmouth become a Dementia Friendly City.“

Olivia Marsh, Commissioning Project Manager for Portsmouth CCG adds, “With dementia diagnosis figures in Portsmouth predicted to rise by two thirds by 2030, it is vital that awareness is raised of the services available to support people with dementia and their families and carers.  Dementia awareness week is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of Dementia and the work happening across Portsmouth and is an opportunity to unite as a community to continue to improve understanding of Dementia.”

The Remind Dementia Service is helping to make Portsmouth a Dementia Friendly City and is working to create a Local Dementia Action Alliance -  a network of organisations, businesses and community members who want to improve the lives of local people affected by dementia. Anyone wishing to find out more about Dementia Friendly sessions for their organisation, or who would like to join the Dementia Action Alliance, can contact the Remind team on: 033 0332 4030 Remind@solentmind.org.

Dementia Awareness Week 2017
In the UK, there are about 800,000 people with dementia, and it is estimated that around 400,000 people have dementia but do not know it. By raising awareness about this condition, it is hoped that more people will be diagnosed earlier, giving more time for them to come to terms with future symptoms.

Remind Dementia Service
Remind is delivered in partnership by Solent Mind, SCA Group and Rowans Hospice. It is funded by Portsmouth CCG. If you have been diagnosed with dementia, and live in the PO1 to PO6 area or have a GP within PO1 to PO6, we can support you and the people who help care for you. We will tailor our help to suit your needs and we will make sure you have all the support and information you need.

The Remind dementia support service for Portsmouth is available 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, and 9am to 4:30pm Fridays:

Making Portsmouth a Dementia Friendly City

The Remind Dementia Service is working to make Portsmouth a Dementia Friendly City. By engaging with local businesses and community services, we will help people have a better understanding of how they can support people with dementia and their carers:

  • We are providing free Dementia Friends training sessions to local businesses and services. This will help to create more awareness of the needs of people with dementia and how to make shop environments more welcoming.
  • We are inviting other organisations to join a Dementia Action Alliance which will work to attain Dementia Friendly status for Portsmouth.
