Networking lunch, recipe for a healthy workplace!

Thursday, 2 June 2011

Thank you to those organisations who came along to our networking lunch on 20th May as part of National Mind Week. This year’s theme of 'Taking Care of Business’ was obviously very relevant to local employers.

Those that attended found the chance to discuss the current issues they are facing extremely valuable; with the main concerns coming out as how can employers support staff through redundancy and uncertain futures, coupled with managing the increasing workloads of staff that remain in post.

The difficulty of accessing appropriate support for staff with significant mental health problems was also highlighted, as was the lack of financial support available to enable a phased return to work for those recovering from illness.

Employers ranging from public sector, private companies and voluntary organisations recommended flexible work structures, regular supervision, mental health assessments as part of annual reviews and the development of an open and honest culture, where people feel able to talk about their issues, as proactive ways of improving workplace mental health.

The need for stress management training for employees and mental health awareness training for employers was agreed as an essential part of core training for any organisation, with employers interested in finding ways to access the right training on their limited and sometimes nonexistent training budgets.

The networking lunch enabled us a local mental health charity to open up the conversation about mental health with local employers and we are keen to develop this further, working with other organisation to help improve the mental health of our local workforce. If you are an employer and want to talk to us about mental health in the workplace, or any other mental health related issue then please contact Sheelagh Kreft Business Development Manager on 02380208916 skreft@solentmind.org.uk
