It’s been a very busy few months at Solent Mind, Jane Harvey, Head of Home Support gives us an update on what’s been happening.

Launch of a New Older Person’s Service

On the first of July, we launched our Older Persons Mental Health Reablement outreach team which works with older people in Portsmouth City. We’ll be supporting older people in the community to relearn the everyday skills we all rely upon. From giving people the tools to cope when things feel difficult, to showing them what sources of support are available; our focus will be upon building confidence and helping independence at home.

Supporting Carers

As people with mental health problems receive treatment, there is often a hidden army of people around them taking on caring responsibilities. Carers play a huge part in getting people back on their feet. Needing to juggle work, family and caring responsibilities can lead to lots of pressures upon carers’ own mental health.  Our team helps carers to balance their responsibilities and provide an opportunity to share experiences with other people in a similar situation. In the last few months, we provided over 250 support sessions for Carers. Part of this is through support groups on a monthly basis. For example, our Winchester Carer Support group had a wellness workshop (WRAP) this month where they looked at things they can do to keep well, triggers and early warning signs.

Housing Support

Having a safe and secure place to call home is crucial to anyone’s mental health and wellbeing. The floating support team looks to resolve issues around housing. We’ve recently started a Housing surgery with local community Mental Health team in Southampton, and this has been well received. We fielded lots of calls this month from people following the announcement of the recent budget, which caused many people to be distressed about how it would affect them and their families. Our staff worked with over 109 people over the last few months on a range of support including securing grants for new beds, carpets and a cooker.
