It's a Hat trick!

Solent Mind staff and volunteers helped partner organisations, The Saints Foundation, Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, Southampton City Council and Southampton Voluntary Services to raise awareness of mental health and mental health stigma at a 5 aside Football Tournament last Saturday.

36 teams from a variety of backgrounds including Skandia, CLEAR (supporting refugee and asylum seekers), Southfields( mental health recovery unit) and two teams all the way from Liverpool (Everton Time to Change Community Football programme), battled it out on the pitch to win the tournament trophies and of course the coveted Time to Change T shirts.

Not all the action happened on the pitch, the teams of brilliant volunteers were kept busy all day chatting to players and supporters, sharing experiences of mental distress, highlighting ways to maintain mental wellbeing, as well as sign posting to support services.

Solent Mind Chief Executive Richard Barritt, spoke about the "difficulties us blokes have in talking about any health related issue especially mental health ...... and the benefits of using football to relay important health messages..," before presenting the winners and runners up with their trophies.

Congratulations to the winning team who were consistently good throughout the tournament. We think everyone who took part was a winner but our men of the tournament have to be the young men who opened up about their personal experiences of mental health problems in front of their mates and fellow team members and encouraged them to support the Time to Campaign and Solent Mind.

They are our tournament winners too!
