Brian’s Story

Friday, 22 May 2015

Brian has lived with Dementia for a number of years and has short-term memory problems, as well as difficulty performing the day-to-day tasks that many of us take for granted.

Brian came to Mayfield Nurseries not really knowing what to expect, and neither did we as everyone with Dementia faces different issues and challenges. Brian joined our ‘Forget Me Nots Gardening Group’ for people with dementia and was buddied with our Dementia Volunteer Mike. After a few weeks of trying a wide range of gardening tasks, and discussions with Brian and his family, we found physical work that didn’t require too much dexterity made Brian smile the most.

Coming to Mayfield Nurseries has given Brian and his wife a huge amount of joy. As things have become more difficult for Brian, time at Mayfield Nurseries gives him the opportunity to feel useful and make new friends - which has greatly improved his mental health.

Brian’s wife says that the Forget Me Not Dementia gardening group allows Brian ‘… to do what he loves; working’ and as Mike has noted ‘if Brian’s singing, then he’s happy’. Brian now sings quite a lot at Mayfield Nurseries! Brian and Mike are now most likely to be seen at Mayfields moving heavy bags of compost, digging over beds or having a well earned cup of tea together.

The Forget Me Nots Gardening Group runs at Mayfield Nurseries on Wednesdays and Fridays 10:30 am – 12:30 pm.
